Hollowform project mashup final

Image
For my hollowform project me and my partner chose three of our objects each and started brainstorming! We then started doodling and doing some sketches of things we though of in reference to our objects! We started with some thoughts involving ice cream cones, milkshakes, mushrooms, ect. in the end we chose a cloud crown! in our sketches we saw that this might be a cute little dreamy candle holder. our original objects separately our mashup! we added some holes and smaller gaps ontop and below the holes to try and eliminate the flat areas that the 3d printer would have a hard time gapping. we also flattened the bottom so it could stand and added some thickness to the "cloud" bowl part.

3d printed hollowform drafts!

I got started on some hollowforms for the 3d printer, I didn't get too crazy with these as we still have to mashup with a partner!

Papercraft prototype 2

Image
So, since I last posted, I have changed my prototype/project design. Since seeing more layered papercraft art, I've decided to move in that direction. I wanted to make a card or a poster design, and I was thinking of going in the direction of houseplants since I've tried to keep plants in my life, especially when living in the city more as an adult. Plants are also good models for layering and depth.  I start with some thumbnails, and move through some stages of design. I try to finalize layers to add depth in my final draft before moving into vector software where I outline my layers and try to solve some cutting problems.  Prototype Vector and the layers. (with white blank backing layer) I then move onto rhino, realize my scale is way off, resize, and save separate files for each image. and then to the laser cutter!  laser cutting. layers together. Layers taped together. In my next model I have a few changes to make. I may experiment with glue or other tapes.  I am excited

Papercraft Prototype

So for my papercraft I wanted to go somewhere pop culture. I was inspired by the sailor moon (i think?) wand that was made in class in a previous semester. I looked into doing the chaos emerald, then I decided to go for the master sword. so for my prototype i just did a first step on doing a blade, no handle yet, just as a test. It went terrible, but I learned a lot. I learned I need to really understand the scale of my flaps. I also found I had trouble using printer paper, but my final will be in construction paper. as you can see these are quite bad, only one side is even presentable. But with these findings i'll stride on!!

Reading Week Break

I didn't do much. not even on this rhino warmup. I forgot you need to duplicate the shape before unfolding it... oops. hope you guys had a good reading week break!

Paper-craft : Digital Samples

Image
For my paper-craft project I decided to start slow and try my best to create abstract objects and focus on the act of learning rhino and how to unroll manually in program. I started by trying to learn how to use freehand sculpting using points, extruding flat shapes, and tilting the top ends of objects. In some of my unfolds I found myself excited by the act of unrolling as it proved to be a puzzle when the shape turns in on itself.

Paper-craft Research - Funky paper tech

Image
For our next project the class is doing paper-craft models that are started in Rhino, unfolded, printed and assembled physically! In scholarly fashion I have to do some looking around to find some inspiration and open my eyes to what paper-craft can be and what I really like about 3d paper sculptures. While looking around on colossal I found some really precious animal sculptures, backlit paper dioramas, and pop coloured tech casing that appears infinitely customizable and cherished. For my individual artist to focus on I chose  Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, known by their moniker Zim & Zou. The french duo relishes the medium of paper for its versatility, texture, and colour range. The duo crafts with a manufactured quality in their more box shaped work. The whimsy in the colour palette is familiar to barbie's in box, and other toys. It's brings comfort and joy through an overly coloured childish palette that sparks wonder. The edges are clean, detail isn'
