Reading Week Break

Paper-craft : Digital Samples

 For my paper-craft project I decided to start slow and try my best to create abstract objects and focus on the act of learning rhino and how to unroll manually in program. I started by trying to learn how to use freehand sculpting using points, extruding flat shapes, and tilting the top ends of objects. In some of my unfolds I found myself excited by the act of unrolling as it proved to be a puzzle when the shape turns in on itself.  

Paper-craft Research - Funky paper tech

      For our next project the class is doing paper-craft models that are started in Rhino, unfolded, printed and assembled physically! In scholarly fashion I have to do some looking around to find some inspiration and open my eyes to what paper-craft can be and what I really like about 3d paper sculptures. While looking around on colossal I found some really precious animal sculptures, backlit paper dioramas, and pop coloured tech casing that appears infinitely customizable and cherished. For my individual artist to focus on I chose  Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, known by their moniker Zim & Zou. The french duo relishes the medium of paper for its versatility, texture, and colour range. The duo crafts with a manufactured quality in their more box shaped work. The whimsy in the colour palette is familiar to barbie's in box, and other toys. It's brings comfort and joy through an overly coloured childish palette that sparks wonder. Milestone Project 1

      My final render! I unfortunately missed Mondays class due to a close contact w/ covid, but I managed to finish the project while learning rhinoceros on my own! I'm really proud of how my render turned out, the tropical vibe, the low lighting of a firestick from the pirates. I'm looking forward to using rhino in the future.
